The Mine Health and Safety Branch was created in 1993 to take over the functions and responsibilities of the Resource Management Branch. It was responsible for all aspects of health and safety inspections of coal mines, exploration sites, placer mines, rock quarries and sand and gravel operations. Specialists reviewed mining operations for mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, occupational health and safety and emergency preparedness. The branch sponsored mine rescue competitions and investigated accidents or dangerous occurences at mines. The branch reported to the Mineral Resources Division. In 1996, the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources was absorbed into the Ministry of Employment and Investment and the branch became the Energy and Minerals Division.
