Biographical history

The British Columbia government established a Supreme Court registry at Alberni, in the Nanaimo Judicial District, effective June 1, 1939. It was established by Order-in-Council 0675-1939 dated May 17, 1939.

By the same order, the Registrar of the County Court, Alberni Registry (already in existence) was appointed District Registrar for the new Supreme Court registry at Alberni, also effective June 1, 1939.

Currently (to March 31, 2016) there is an active Supreme Court registry at Port Alberni.

Alberni amalgamated with Port Alberni in October 1967; the re-incorporated entity is called City of Port Alberni. [Source: BC Geographical Names Office]

BC Archives holds records of both the Supreme Court (Alberni) and Supreme Court (Port Alberni); the exact relationship between these registries, and whether one is the direct successor of the other, has not yet been determined by BC Archives staff research.
