Scope and content
The album contains views taken between 1867 and 1868, and includes photographs of Esquimalt, Victoria, Sooke and other places on Vancouver Island; views of New Westminster, Burrard Inlet, and scenes along the Cariboo Road, and photographs of gold mining operations and communities in the Cariboo District. The album also includes a number of images of First Nations individuals, photographed by Dally to illustrate the different "types" of First Nations in British Columbia.
This type of album was made to order by Dally in his photographic studio from a selection of prints chosen by the purchaser.
This album formerly belonged to Chief Justice Joseph Needham. Probably assembled by Dally, with additional photographs and comments added to the interleaving by Needham.
The majority of the captions are presumed to have been written by Frederick Dally.
