RECORDED: Creston (B.C.), 1980-10-30 SUMMARY: Speaks on the shortcomings of normal school training. Tells history of the Sanka [?] and poverty of the district. Tells of a disastrous inspector's visit which caused him to receive a poor report. Tells the history of Alice Siding, 4 miles north of Creston. Describes the school; repairing an old organ in time for the Christmas concert; as well as an unusual water supply in a mine shaft. Comments on the value of one room schooling.

RECORDED: Kimberley (B.C.), [1980] SUMMARY: Teacher at Alice Siding school, 1927-1930. He was supervising principal of four elementary schools in Kimberly. Recalls his early teaching years at a one room school. Talks of the inspectors of those days who walked to their schools. Amusing account of hurried preparation for the inspector's visit. Several anecdotes. Tape ends with positive remarks about one room schools; feels consolidation is often a mistake. He also feels that removing the strap was a mistake as the pupils are now in control of the school.
