Nass River

SUMMARY: "CBC Monday Evening" was a multi-part series that included documentaries and interviews on the arts, along with drama and serious music. This episode, "Nass River", is a program devoted to the native Indian music of the Nass River area. Part 1 focuses on a concert of traditional Tsimshian songs arranged for flute and percussion. Recorded at the CBC Fall Festival of Music, this performance featured Harry Crozin [sp?] (flute) and William Goode [sp?] (percussion). Robert Clothier, the reader, recounts literal translations from Marius Barbeau's work on native music. Part 2 is a documentary on the discovery and preservation of the native music heritage, written and narrated by Peter Haworth. "Barbeau and MacMillan On The Nass" recounts the July-August 1927 visit of ethnologist Marius Barbeau and musician Ernest Macmillan, who came to research and document Indian music of the Nass area. In a more recent visit (1974), Don Mowatt and Peter Haworth attempt to recreate this first visit and seek out Indian elders who recalled these early songs. The area around Arrandale Cannery is visited. Recordings heard that include music, and also the voices of Barbeau and Macmillan. A chief, Frank Bolton, is recalled with his songs.;
