History
Bill Bennett was born in Kelowna on 14 April 1932, the son of former BC Premier W.A.C. Bennett. Following high school, he established a career in business, and he and his brother became involved with several successful real-estate ventures. In 1973, Bennett succeeded his father as the leader of the Social Credit party, and was elected to the office of Premier in 1975 after defeating the New Democrat’s Dave Barrett.
Bennett served as Premier from 1975 until his resignation in 1986. Under his leadership, the province saw the building of the Coquihalla Highway, BC Place, and the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre. During this time, the Province also welcomed the world to Expo 86 and established the original lines of Vancouver’s SkyTrain system. However, Bennett’s administration also saw significant increases in the Provincial sales tax rate, Autoplan insurance premiums, and in the province’s ferry fares.
In 2007, Bennett received the Order of Canada. He passed away in Kelowna on 3 December 2015.
