History

Richard Blanshard was born in England. He was interested in colonial service and accepted the commission of Governor of Vancouver Island in 1849. His governorship did not last long as a rift between himself and James Douglas, chief factor for the Hudson's Bay Company in Victoria, forced him to resign in 1852. He spent the remainder of his life in England.
