History
BC Assessment is a provincial Crown corporation that classifies and assesses the value of all real property in British Columbia.
The British Columbia Assessment Authority was created in response to the need for a fair, independent organization that valued property in the province. In 1974, the government of British Columbia set out to establish a non-partisan commission to examine property assessment and taxation.
Upon formation, the seven-member commission recommended that legislation be introduced to create a province-wide assessment authority. This authority would be independent of the property taxing function (either municipal or provincial) and it would operate independent of provincial politics. Following the recommendation of its Special Committee, the Legislative Assembly passed the Assessment Authority Act which received Royal Assent on July 2, 1974.
To meet its mandate, BC Assessment completes a property assessment for properties in B.C. every year.
BC Assessment's annual property assessments provide the foundation for local and provincial taxing authorities to calculate billions of dollars in property tax revenue each year that fund the community services provided by local governments around the province.
