History

The New Westminster Provincial Asylum opened in 1878. That same year, the Asylum at Royal Hospital in Victoria closed and all patients were transferred to New Westminster. In 1897 the New Westminster Provincial Asylum was renamed the Public Hospital for the Insane (PHI), also referred to as the Provincial Hospital for the Insane.
