British Columbia portions of the 1891 census

The series consists of microfilmed copies of the British Columbia portions of the 1891 census, created by the Census Office of Canada.

The records are arranged by the five federal census districts: Cariboo, New Westminster, Vancouver, Victoria and Yale and then by sub-district within each district.

The fonds consists of Sargison's diaries, notebooks, and letterbook. Fonds includes minute book of the Building Committee of the Canadian Wesleyan Methodist New Connexion Church of Montreal, of which Sargison was a member, and minutes of the Blue Ribbon Club of Victoria, B.C.

Letterbook

The series consists of a letterbook containing copies of Sargison's correspondence outward from 1890 to 1900. It contains letters regarding his involvement with the Blue Ribbon Club, the Independent Order of Good Templars, and other temperance organizations in Victoria. Letters also reflect his work as an accountant and notary public and his duties as chief Census officer for British Columbia during the 1891 census.

Notebook

Notebook/diary compiled while enumerating Coast Districts "B" and "C" for 1891 Dominion census. Notebook portions consist of rough notes re: the population and industrial establishments between Rivers Inlet and Port Simpson (District "B") and in the Queen Charlotte Islands (District "C"). Diary portions begin 26 June 1891 and chronicle journey from Moodyville to Rivers Inlet, Port Essington, Port Simpson, and Queen Charlottes via steamers NAGASAKI and NELL. Diary concludes at journey's end, 28 August 1891, in Victoria.

Series includes a Victoria City official Census, 1891: returns of census taken as a result of the city's belief that the federal census had placed Victoria's population at too low a figure. Census lists heads of households and single people alphabetically with either address or occupation, number of members of household and numbers who were either Indian or Chinese. Residents of Protestant Orphans' Home St. Ann's School and St. Joseph's Hospital, Indians, and crews of barques Callao and Serica are listed separately at back of volume.
