History

The Dept. of Mines and Petroleum Resources was renamed from the Dept. of Mines in 1960 (SBC 1960, c. 107). The purpose of the department was to administer all mining laws and to manage all matters affecting mining, including the collection, publication and circulation of information. For the majority of its existence, the department was arranged into five branches: Administration Branch, Analytical and Assay Branch, Inspection Branch, Minerological Branch and Petroleum and Natural Gas Branch.

In 1974, the department was reorganized into two branches consisting of the Mineral Resources Branch and Operations Branch. In January 1975, the Operations Branch was added to the department. In 1976, the government renamed the department as the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum Resources (OIC 3199/76).
