Beautiful British Columbia magazine photograph albums

Series consists of colour photographs taken by staff photographers in the Special Services Branch and its predecessor bodies, the Film and Photographic Branch and the Photographic Branch ca. 1966 to 1982. The photographs were taken mainly to illustrate Beautiful British Columbia magazine, a publication produced by the Ministry of Tourism, but could also be used for a variety of other publications and presentations. The photographs were taken using colour film. Prints were made from the negatives and were pasted into large albums for reference purposes. They were arranged by a classification system which consisted of a region or subject group number followed by an image number. These images cover all areas of the province and depict natural scenes as well as towns and cities, individuals, groups, animals and plants. For indexes to these photographs, see the related series: Indexes to Beautiful British Columbia magazine photographs.
In addition, most of the albums contain a copy of the index for that particular region or subject group. These copies are tucked in a pocket inside the front cover of each album. A reference copy of all the album lists is available in a binder stored with the old photo reference binders, ask for it at the retrievals desk.

Beautiful British Columbia Magazine photographs

Series consists of colour photographs taken by staff photographers in the Special Services Branch and its predecessor bodies, the Film and Photographic Branch and the Photographic Branch ca. 1960 to 1986. The photographs were taken mainly to illustrate Beautiful British Columbia magazine, a publication produced by the Ministry of Tourism, but could also be used for a variety of other publications and presentations. The photographs were taken using colour or slide film. The negatives were then given a classification number and filed in negative drawers in the branch image bank along with some copies of prints and transparencies or slides. The classification system consisted of region or subject group number followed by the image number. These images cover all areas of the province and depict natural scenes as well as towns and cities, individuals, groups, animals and plants. Many of the earliest negatives were removed from the ministry's existing Travel Industry photograph library (which included some Forest Service photographs) and renumbered with the Beautiful British Columbia magazine classification system. Later negatives were taken specifically for Beautiful British Columbia magazine and were numbered only under the new system.

Beautiful British Columbia magazine transparencies

Series consists of colour transparencies created by staff photographers in the Special Services Branch of the Ministry of Tourism, and its predecessor bodies, the Film and Photographic Branch and the Photographic Branch ca. 1962-1975. The photographs were taken mainly to illustrate Beautiful British Columbia magazine, a publication produced by the Ministry of Tourism. The photographs were taken using colour film; the negatives were then numbered and filed in the branch image bank along with some copies of prints and slides. Colour transparencies of various sizes were made from the negatives in the image bank specifically for publication in Beautiful British Columbia magazine. The transparencies are arranged by original image bank file number but many also have a label which gives details about the publication date, issue and page number. Files numbered 15100N to 21699N were transferred in accession 88-1350. All other files were transferred in accession 199003-004.

CBC midweek : Centennial journey

SUMMARY: "CBC Mid-Week" is a program of miscellaneous commentary and music. This episode, "Centennial Journey", is a record and commentary, by Andreas Schroeder and Jeremy Long, of a journey through British Co;lumbia, sampling the opinions and feelings of young people about living there in 1971 -- the Centennial of B.C. becoming a Canadian province.;

Diaries

Series consists of 13 volumes of diaries of Canadian Pacific Railway exploration and construction. Also includes an account of a traverse of trail from Edmonton to Landing on the Athabasca River, August 1877, and an account book, 1885-1889.

Diaries, letters and notes

Diaries (1854-1883), covering travels from Lachine to Red River (1854-1855), Lachine to Honolulu (1859), the voyage to Victoria (1860), travel in British Columbia (1864, 1867, 1868, 1870), journeys to Europe (1865 and 1880), travel from Montreal, where he was Chief Factor (1872, 1875, 1877, 1879), and a journey to Japan and China (1882-1883). The British Columbia diaries cover travel on the North West Coast (1870) to the Kootenays via the Dewdney Trail (1868) and to French Creek, McCullough Creek, Kamloops, Clearwater River, etc. (1867), and life in Victoria (1864). Letters and notes, including one letter written by his son Edwin to his mother, 7 June 1914, Winnipeg, describing his visit to Victoria and Vancouver.

Diary of a trip "out West" in 1933

The item consists of an illustrated typed transcript of a diary of a trip "out West' taken by Kit A. Sauvary from June 22 to July 30, 1933. Kit Sauvary and her party traveled across the Northern United States by automobile from Toronto, entering British Columbia South of Kootenay Lake. They took the Southern Trans-Provincial Highway to Princeton, North to Spences Bridge, and down the Fraser Canyon. They visited Vancouver and Vancouver Island before returning via the Banff Windermere Highway and the Rockies, through the United States and back to Toronto. The diary was written as a series of letters to Sauvary's parents in Guernsey, typed up in 1979 and contains photographs and marked route maps of the journey from 1933.

Frank Swannell papers

The records include: diaries, field books, scrapbooks and subject files containing notes and correspondence covering Swannell's career as a surveyor in Northern British Columbia, his army service in the First World War in Europe and Russia and his later travels in British Columbia, Europe and Asia. The diaries and field books are profusely illustrated with photos.

Indexes to Beautiful British Columbia magazine photographs

Series consists of various files which list or index the Beautiful British Columbia magazine photographs. The indexes were created by the Special Services branch between 1980 and 1987 and were transferred with the photographs. The indexes consist of several lists arranged in numerical order. Most of the lists refer to the slides only and include both a master volume and specific lists by region or subject group number. There is also a master negative list which covers the negatives and prints. The series also includes a four volume subject index, arranged alphabetically by subject, which covers the slides, negatives and prints. The indexes and lists are incomplete in that not every single photograph is listed or indexed. In addition, the indexes may list a negative, slide or print that was removed from the photograph image bank before transfer to the BC Archives.

Lists of the prints in the large print albums (GR-3305) are with the albums themselves, tucked into a pocket in the inside cover. A reference copy of all the album lists is available in a binder stored with the old photo reference binders, ask for it at the retrievals desk.

Journal

The item is a microfilm copy of a journal kept by King of a trip from New Brunswick to California and British Columbia from 1863 to 1865. It also includes several 1873 journal entries, lists of books read, letters sent, expenses and other notes.

Letters from William Salsbury to his wife

The file contains photocopies of two letters written by William Ferriman Salsbury, a railroad official, to his wife "my dear child" describing his trip from Montreal to Vancouver aboard the first transcontinental passenger train.

Miscellaneous records

The series consists of various records created by King including reminiscences entitled "Trip to California"; a typewritten transcript of a trip from New Brunswick to Quesnel via Panama, 1863-1864, with a brief account of activities in Quesnel in 1865; pocket diary from 1864 containing accounting entries, and under dates March 16-21, an account of a "Trip from Mouth Quesnelle to Big Bend" dated March 25 to April 12; seven letters addressed to "Willie", from R.W. Carrall dated Barkerville, 1867 and 1868; conveyances to W.C. King of interest in Minnehaha and the United Mining Company by R.W. Carrall, 1868.

Newcombe family papers

Correspondence, notebooks, subject files, accounts, annotated books, etc., of C.F. Newcombe and his son W.A. Newcombe, reflecting their interest in the ethnology, natural history and history of British Columbia. Newcombe family papers. The G.T. Emmons collection, consisting of correspondence, notes and manuscripts, mainly on the Tlingit Indians. Maynard family papers, consisting of diaries and papers of Richard and Hannah Maynard, Victoria photographers, and their son Albert. Papers of Emily Carr, and re her estate, of which W.A. Newcombe was an executor.

Volumes 21 to 30 were arranged by the BC Archives in 1975.

Volumes 31 to 59 were arranged by the Royal BC Museum, ca. 1970. BC Archives volume and file numbers have been added to the these volumes.

Volumes 239/240 were Found In Collection in the Archives in 2022 and added to the collection.

Personal and profesional papers

Series consists of a family register and diary, 1815-1904, consisting of notices of births and deaths of Marcus Smith and his wife and children, obituary notices of Marcus Smith, and extracts from his diaries copied in 1896; [A00856]; various documents relating to C.P.R. exploration, 1862-1874, letter book, 1872-1875, diary, 1867, various memoranda, diary extracts and biographical notes, reel A00857; reel A00858 contains a 15 page typed autobiography of Marcus Smith and the family register and diary.

Reminiscences and diary

Reminiscences and diary. The author moved from Ontario to Alberta, where she taught school, then travelled through British Columbia, resided in Washington state, and taught in Saskatchewan.

Scrapbooks

Scrapbooks, 1925-1950 (5 volumes) containing postcards, photographs, hotel and motel brochures, menus, tickets, time tables, place mats and other memorabilia collected by Mr. and Mrs. Scott Graham on vacations in Ontario, the United States (mainly New York, Washington, D.C., and Washington State), British Columbia and the Prairie Provinces. The scrapbooks also contain theatre programmes, Anglican Church leaflets and Council of Women and Women's Canadian Church meeting notices, etc.

The B.C. Coast

The item is an essay called "The B.C. Coast" by Susan Katherine Hutton of London England. It describes a cruise aboard the coasting steamer Cassiar. It is annotated and includes photographs.

The unknown Rockies

The item is a composite print of a travelogue from 1974. It depicts a skiing holiday through the eyes of a Japanese tour group member, who recollects his adventures while waiting for his plane at the Vancouver International Airport. Shows skiing at Grouse Mountain, Kimberley, Fairmont Hot Springs, Panorama, Radium Hot Springs, Banff and Lake Louise. Includes a sequence on glacier skiing in the Bugaboos (Purcell Mountains).
