Central registry of the Immigration Branch

This series contains the Central Registry of the Immigration Branch of the Dept. of the Interior. These records (classified in the Public Archives of Canada as RG 76 Series 1) include deputy ministers' files, personnel dockets, and the operational records of federal government immigration agencies in Canada, the United States, Great Britain, and Continental Europe. Several files deal with Asian immigration and Doukhobor settlements in British Columbia. Also included are Registers of Chinese immigration at Port of New Westminster, 1887-1908 (RG 76 Series II) and headquarters registers of Chinese immigrants and residents, 1885-1903 (RG 76 series VI).

Series consists of Chilliwack County Court plaint and procedure books (1898-1977) as well as a Small Debts Court cause book (1903-1907), a list of naturalizations (1913), and a list of probates (1913). Indexes are included for some volumes.

Plaint and procedure books contain primarily civil cases. The volume covering 1970-1977 contains primarily criminal cases, including appeals and cases under the Speedy Trials Act.

Correspondence and papers

Series consists of Alderman Wilson's correspondence and papers pertaining to his anti-Oriental stand during the years 1938-1942. It also includes papers, briefs and pamphlets concerning the Oriental situation in British Columbia and the West Coast of North America; school exercise book containing Sunday School picnic accounts and church camp accounts for various years during the 1930s.

Correspondence regarding immigration

This series consists of correspondence related to the 1904 British Columbia Immigration Act. The records were created or received by the Provincial Immigration Officer, a position held by the Superintendent of the BC Provincial Police Force for these years. The correspondence is primarily with other government officials such as the Premier, Provincial Secretary and Deputy Immigration Officers, including one who worked in Blaine, Washington. Some correspondence may be from immigrants or other officials such as representatives from the Japanese Consul in BC.

Records relate to a variety of subjects, from financial expenses and statistics to the detention and deportation of those deemed “enemy aliens”. Many records regard Japanese people.

The records are arranged alphabetically by sender or subject. The majority of records are correspondence in, but there are also some copies of correspondence out written by the Superintendent.

Correspondence regarding the settlement of Vancouver Island

The series consists of copies of correspondence, chiefly from Alexander Begg (b.1825) [British Columbia Emigration Commissioner] to the Marquis of Lothian [Secretary of State for Scotland], concerning proposed Crofter settlement on Vancouver Island. There is additional correspondence from J.H. Turner [B.C. Minister of Finance] to Chancellor of the Exchequer, along with appeals from Highland crofters interested in the settlement. The series also includes documents from the government of British Columbia and the United Kingdom re financing the settlement, British Columbia government emigration pamphlets, and tracts from the British Columbia Development Company and the Vancouver Island Development Syndicate.

There are also documents and provincial government bills dealing with the establishment of deep sea fisheries, plus newspaper clippings, parliamentary reports, and Pacific Coast Steamship Company brochures.
