History
The Medical Services Commission was established on July 1, 1968 under the Medical Services Act (c. 24, SBC 1967) and is responsible for administering the provision and payment of medical services in BC through the Medical Services Plan. The Commission’s mandate is to “facilitate reasonable access throughout BC to quality medical care, health care, and diagnostic facility services for BC residents.” The Commission operates under the legal authority of the Medicare Protection Act and related Regulations. The Commission is also responsible for managing the Available Amount, a fund which is established to pay practitioners for medical services and which is set annually by government.
In 1994, the Commission expanded to a nine-member body. Membership consists of three government representatives, three representatives from the Doctors of BC, and three representatives from the public. Public members are nominated by government and the Doctors of BC.
