This series consists of correspondence, feasibility studies, and technical reports concerning proposed Third Crossing of Burrard Inlet, Vancouver, B.C., 1972. These files were compiled by W.A. Benson, Co-ordinating Chairman of the Canada Land Inventory and director of the Agriculture and Rural Development Act Branch (ARDA) of the Department of Agriculture.

Amateur film. Miscellaneous footage taken during the time that Miss Gerry worked as a nurse for the federal Dept. of Indian and Northern Affairs. Includes footage of Indian reserves and villages, celebrations and school children; a First Communion procession at St. Paul's Indian Catholic Church in North Vancouver; hospital and clinic scenes; residential schools and Coqualeetza Indian School and Hospital; Cariboo highway and scenery; Williams Lake Stampede; etc. Also includes OUR CARIBOO NEIGHBORS, a discrete two-reel film that depicts a 1941 automobile journey to visit Indian reserves and missions in the Cariboo. Item consists of one photograph of A.T. Bushby family and Claudet family at summer camp, Burrard's Inlet. The photograph is attributed to F.G. Claudet.

Clearance papers, bills of health, and manifests

The series consists of clearance papers, bills of health, and manifests created between 1872-1875. Records include Canadian clearances from Port of Victoria and Port of Burrard Inlet; United States Customs clearances from Alaska, Puget Sound, San Francisco, and Willamette Districts; and one clearance from the Republic of Chile. Also included are U.S. Customs Bills of Health from the District of San Francisco and manifests for the Str. Goliah; Ste. C. Walker; and Panther.

Footage. "Probably members of the Columbia Coast Mission visiting the mission boat ['Columbia'] in Vancouver harbour during the Royal Visit. Includes ladies and two nurses. Scenes up the coast taken from the Mission boat: blue sky and sea, islands, and an unidentified [floating] settlement and its residents. Lion's Gate Bridge [long shot], looking out Vancouver Harbour. Lighthouse up the coast. Scenery through the islands, [fishing] boats & settlements. [Logging sequence.] Flowers in an unidentified garden and a little stone fountain in a pond with swans. Two women on deck of Mission boat look out over small village up the coast. Fishing boats, settlements. Man painting hull of Mission boat. Nurses. Boat at dock with other boats nearby, probably in Inner Harbour, Victoria. Empress Hotel. Ladies [disembarking]. Fishermen picking fish out of hold, Mission boat nearby. Scenery and settlement with fish-boats up the coast. At a Lighthouse (Pachena?), a small boat is transported across the top of the water by a cable, then lowered into the water when out of danger. The boat is then rowed out to the Mission boat. More scenery, settlements and islands. Scenery up the coast, islands, settlements, tugboat passing, destroyer passing. Point-No-Point Lodge and beach. [Logging scene.] [The yacht 'Taconite'] in Vancouver Harbour for King and Queen's visit. Many flags and pennants. Lion's Gate Bridge in background. Hundreds of boats in Harbour: fishboats with flags, cabin cruisers, motorboats, and RCN destroyer H48, 'HMCS Fraser'. Biplanes fly over bridge very close to cables. 'Princess Marguerite' hoves into view then sails away under bridge to Vancouver Island, carrying the King and Queen. Village church with wedding party emerging. Construction of the Lion's Gate Bridge, Vancouver

The item consists of an ECO master made from an industrial film originally made between 1937 and 1939. It contains a detailed record of the construction of the First Narrows Bridge (Lion's Gate Bridge) between Vancouver and the North Shore of Burrard Inlet. A.J.T. Taylor, who promoted the idea of the bridge and the residential development of the North Shore, is seen discussing the plans with architect John Anderson. The bridge was first crossed by a car on November 4, 1938 and opened to the public on November 12, 1938. John Anderson receives the first toll ticket. Charles Marega's sculptured lions are shown. The "Empress of Japan" steams under the bridge. On May 29, 1939 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth cross the bridge and later, under naval escort, they pass under it aboard a ship bound for Victoria.

Cornelius Bryant papers

Cornelius Bryant emigrated from England in 1856. He taught school in Nanaimo from 1857 to 1870, and then became a Methodist minister, serving in that capacity at Nanaimo, at several places in the Lower Mainland and Lower Fraser Valley, and at Bella Bella, before retiring in 1893. Records consist of correspondence, 1859-1895, including letters of introduction, letters inward concerning family matters and expenses, letters outward concerning the New Westminster congregation and mission work among Natives in the Nanaimo area, and a letterbook, 1870-1895; diaries, 19 August 1856 - 1 February 1857, 1 January 1857 - 6 January 1860 [A01745] and 1 June 1895 - 31 December 1902 (in letterbook, 1870-1895); sermon notes; scrapbook.

Correspondence to Hon. D.M. Eberts, Attorney-General, from Robert Cassidy, Counsel for the Attorney General, reporting on the appeal of the Dominion of Canada and Theodore Ludgate from the 1903 judgment of Justice Martin. He gives many arguments supporting the province's claim to Deadman's Island.

This series consists of printed records relating to the following court cases: the Attorney General of the Province of British Columbia versus Theodore Ludgate, and the Attorney General of the Dominion of Canada regarding ownership of Deadman's Island, Burrard Inlet.

Records include Attorney-General vs. Ludgate report by Robert Cassidy to the Attorney General for British Columbia on the appeal of the Dominion of Canada from the 1901 judgment of Martin, J. (Queen's Printer, 1904, 7 p.). The series also includes various exhibits and other records, such as exhibit 6, "Extracts from blue book containing papers relating to the affairs of British Columbia, 1859-1864" (pp. 307-307(81)); "Evidence before Full Court in addition to that taken at trial" and Exhibits V,W,X,Y (pp. 366-430); reasons for judgment of Chief Justice Gordon Hunter, Justice M.W. Tyrwhitt Drake, and Justice P. A. Irving (pp. 431-445); and B.C. Supreme Court decisions (pp. 446-449). Box 2 contains several duplicates of pp. 307-307(81) and pp. 366-450.

This series consists of a day book of expenditures of road and bridge construction, surveys and transport, 1862-1864; goods received from grocers, Hope, B.C., 1865; correspondence and specifications relating to the construction of the Burrard Inlet road, 1864-1865.

Amateur film. Home movie footage of seashore recreation, boating activities, and regatta events such as swimming and diving competitions, canoe races, rowboat races, speedboat race, parade, etc.

Diary

The series consists of a diary kept by Hargreaves while a member of "W.X.Y." division during a C.P.R. survey of Bute Inlet, 1872. Also includes a typescript diary and survey notes, May to October 1874, kept while surveying between Burrard Inlet and Pender Harbour.

Series consists of logs, journals, notebooks and scrapbooks relating to naval service, 1860-1873; diaries, 1861-1920; journals of BC Pilotage Authority, 1877-1878; copy of letter, 1886, from Bishop Augustine Scriven. Excerpts from diary relating to Victoria Telephone Company available in typescript, August - December 1879. Also includes two oversized, slightly differing versions of a certificate presented to Baker upon his resignation as Secretary to the B.C. Board of Trade, September and October, 1885.

Records include factum of respondent, appellant's factum, case on appeal, and 20 exhibits.

Footage. From an unidentified film. Includes fishing boats at dock; crewmen examining and mending nets and preparing boats; Vancouver skyline from waterfront; many shots of fishing fleet under way and leaving Vancouver harbour (passing under Lion's Gate bridge); a CPR ferry; blocks of ice en route to the boats. (The fishing boats include "Aleutian Queen", "Combat" and "Pacific Belle".) The roll concludes with footage showing a fisheries technician counting fingerlings at Cultus Lake.
