Fred Marshall Wells was primarily responsible for the incorporation of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company in 1927, established to develop the gold quartz veins in the Barkerville area of the Cariboo. The town of Wells was surveyed in 1932 and mining in the area began in 1933. By 1936, the company was producing gold worth approximately 6.7 million dollars. The mine was eventually shut down in 1967. The company merged with Coseka Resources in 1972.

The fonds consists of scrapbooks containing clippings, letters and photographs of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company, employee record cards, reports and certificates which include some photographs and maps; and photographs of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company staff and buildings.
