Biographical history

Carol Denise Pearson (nee Williams), was born in 1910 in Ontario and moved to the west coast, arriving in Victoria in 1917.

Very soon after arriving, Pearson met artist Emily Carr with whom she began taking art lessons. The two struck up a lifelong quasi mother-daughter relationship that lasted until Carr’s death in 1945.

Pearson was a horsewoman and animal trainer. In 1954, Pearson published Emily Carr as I Knew Her.

Pearson died in 1995 in Ontario.

Custodial history

Purchased by the BC Archives in September 2014.

Scope and content

Collection consists of correspondence inward to Carol Pearson from Emily Carr between 1942-1945. The letters were used by Pearson in her book entitled "Emily Carr as I Knew Her", published in 1954.

Also included in the collection are letters documenting the correspondence's provenance.
