History

In 1904, 1000 acres in Coquitlam were set aside for a new hospital. The following year, Colony farm was established to grow food for the Provincial Hospital for the Insane in New Westminster. In 1949 the Riverside Unit opened at Colony Farm to care for some patients. More patients moved there in 1964 after the closure of Colquitz Hospital in Victoria.

Farming was discontinued at Colony Farm in 1983, as facilities at nearby Riverview Hospital began to close.
