B.C. folio : Bralorne

SUMMARY: "BC Folio" was a weekly program featuring items of interest to BC listeners, including interviews with British Columbians of diverse backgrounds. "BC Folio" was broadcast from 1971 to 1976 on the Paci;fic Network, first on AM and later on FM. This episode is a documentary consisting of interviews and sounds about Bralorne, B.C., a mining town located about an hour's drive away from Hope; it was aff;luent and prosperous from 1932 to 1971, but is now a ghost town. This program looks at what happened to the town, and questions whether it can be revived again.;

SUMMARY: "Between Ourselves" was a weekly series of hour-long radio programs that presented Canada to Canadians. It featured aspects of Canadian life in docudramas, plays, music, and interviews, originating fr;om different regions of Canada. The series ran from 1966 to 1979. This episode is a documentary consisting of interviews and sounds about Bralorne, B.C., a mining town located about an hour's drive fr;om Hope. It was affluent and prosperous from 1932 to 1971. but is now a ghost town. This episode looks at what happened to Bralorne, and considers whether the town might be inhabited again. Some ghost; stories are also discussed.;

Industrial film. Edited and inter-titled film showing Bloedel, Stewart and Welch facilities on Vancouver Island. Film highlights construction of Port Alberni sawmill, 1934-1935, from an empty site to an operating plant, and arrival in spring 1935 of the "Rio Dorado", the first ship to load at the company dock. Also includes footage of boat trip to Great Central and scenes in and around the Great Central townsite; the steamship "Princess Maquinna" is shown en route. B.S.&W. personnel shown and named in the film include E.P. Demens, J.H. Bloedel ["J.H.B."], and J.W. Stewart.

The fonds consists of 28 black and white photographs of the British Columbia Pulp and Paper Company's Woodfibre Pulp Mill, taken sometime in the 1930's. The photographs were pasted into an album and were given captions. The images include general shots of the Woodfibre area and town as well as interior mill photographs.

Browning family fonds

The fonds consists of amateur film footage shot by Carleton P. Browning, the manager of the Britannia Mine. The footage mainly documents community life at Britannia Beach, BC, including May Day and Dominion Day celebrations, picnics, skating parties, and other recreational activities. There is also considerable footage devoted to the Browning family and their friends. A reel entitled "Industrial Britannia" (192-) depicts various aspects of the mine operation. Another reel, "PGE Quesnel Cariboo Mines" (1933) shows various mining operations and communities in the Cariboo Region. The fonds as a whole provides an interesting glimpse into the life of a self-contained mining community during the Depression.

Cominco sound recordings

The series consists of taped interviews and radio broadcasts, all relating to Cominco. The original recordings include audio cassettes, 3", 5", 7" and 10" reels and 8 track tapes.

T3135 to T3147 consists of thirteen oral history interviews with retired Cominco employees, recorded by students employed under the Young Canada Works Program in the summer of 1977.

Items T4217:1-2 consist of the proceedings of the annual general meetings for Cominco, 1978 and 1980.

T4245 consist of oral history history interviews, recorded from [197-] to 1982. Archives staff transcribed many of the interviews or kept content notes. Three of the interviews consist of notes or memoirs only, no taped recording. If a transcript of an oral history interview exists, it is noted in the file list. Documentation files containing notes on interviews are also indicated on the file list.

T4350 consists of oral history interviews with retired Cominco employees (1-42), recorded between 1977 and 1981, mainly by Dr. Joanne Pepper. It also contains recordings (43-88) of radio broadcasts and audio tracks for slide presentations, social events and pension rallies, all recorded between the 1950s and 1983. No transcripts exist for these recordings however some content notes exist in the accession file.
