Alfred Balment interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-11-01 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Alfred James Balment describes how he came west from Winnipeg in 1898; built railway bridges in Alberta and the West Kootenays; a description of bridge building; he became a conductor in ;1902 or 1903; describes "boomers"; was the conductor on Crowsnest line the day of the Fernie fire; took several loads of Fernie residents; was elected alderman in Cranbrook on the 'wet' ticket in 1914; Tommy Roberts was the mayor; dispute over replacement of local police by Provincial Police. Allan H. DeWolf films

The series consists of film footage shot by Allan Hatch DeWolf, mainly in the East Kootenay Region of British Columbia. Subjects include: construction and operation of B.C. Spruce Mills' 14-mile-long Moyie River flume near Lumberton, ca.1925; construction of the Mammoth Mine concentrator at Silverton; a portable McKowan Mill cutting Ponderosa pine in the Kamloops or Nelson Forest District, ca.1934; logging sled (colour); tie-cutting operation with portable mill; trucking, unloading and scaling of logs; Cranbrook Dominion Day parade, 1927; family and friends at play, etc. Also includes the four-reel title A BIG GAME HUNT IN BRITISH COLUMBIA (1926).

Andy Gray interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-10-30 SUMMARY: Andy Gray recalls in detail his career on the CPR. Born in Scotland, he came to Canada in 1890 and then to Vancouver 1892. He began work on the CPR in 1906 as a "wiper", then a fireman, and by 1911 as an engineer. He discusses his experience working with the trains in Revelstoke from 1909 to 1915; the Rogers Pass Slide of 1910 with the only survivor, Bill LaChance; train recollections throughout the province; Kootenay Central; and "Cranbrook Ed," who was one of the escaped elephants from a visiting circus at Cranbrook.

Footage. Film proceeds from Alberta boundary at Crowsnest Pass, through Fernie, south to Waldo, then north, west and south through Cranbrook to Yahk. Includes footage of B.C. Spruce Mills Ltd. at Lumberton, Crowsnest Station, Fernie Highway, Elk River Valley, Waldo, Wardner, logged-over area in Kootenay Valley, Bull River. Shots of abandoned and ruined mills appear throughout.

Centennial travellers

The item consists of a documentary film in two parts. To mark Canada's hundredth anniversary, Canadian young people exchanged visits. This film follows a group of Québec boys and girls, aged thirteen to sixteen, who travelled 4800 kilometres west to Cranbrook, British Columbia. The easy friendliness between the young people of two cultures inspires optimism. (NLC description).

Charles George Cowan business records

Business records of Cowan and Penrose Land Agents (Kamloops), including office diaries, correspondence, accounts, and legal documents re property they handled arranged alphabetically under the names of the English investors. Papers of C.P. Cunliffe re his investments in Colonel James Baker's Cranbrook estate and the Cariboo Trading Company, 1913-1931. Papers of C.G. Cowan re acquisition of the Onward Ranch and the 150 Mile Ranch from the Cariboo Trading Company.

Chewers of wood

Documentary. Damage to forests caused by the mountain pine beetle, particularly in the East Kootenay region around Cranbrook. Also shows tree inspection, salvage operations, and research into ways to combat the beetle. Includes interviews with John Borden (SFU), Hamish Kimmins (UBC), and Les Safranyik (Canadian Forest Service).
