Biographical history

In 1908 the British Columbia government established a Supreme Court registry at Cranbrook, effective June 22, 1908. It was approved and ordered by Order-in-Council # 0388-1908 dated June 10, 1908. (Source: Orders-in-Council and British Columbia Gazette 1908, p. 2188)

By the same order, the Registry of the Supreme Court at Fort Steele was closed.

Currently (to March 31, 2016) the Cranbrook Registry of the Supreme Court continues as an active registry.

Name of creator

Biographical history

The British Columbia government established a Supreme Court registry at Fort Steele effective June 25, 1900. A District Registrar for the Fort Steele Registry was appointed, taking effect at the same time. Notice was given by the Provincial Secretary’s Office on 28 May 1900. [Source: BC Gazette May 31, 1900, p.936].

The government, by Order-in-Council 0388-1908, effective 1908 June 22, closed the Fort Steele Registry and established the Cranbrook Registry (in the County of Kootenay). By the same order, a District Registrar and Deputy District Registrar were appointed for the new registry. The Order-in-Council was dated 1908 June 10, notice from Provincial Secretary, 12 June 1908.

Scope and content

This series consists of cause books from Fort Steele Supreme Court, 1900-1908 and from Cranbrook Supreme Court, 1908-1956. Attached to the covers of volume 1 is a list of trust companies registered in 1914; instructions regarding estates of alien enemies, 1915; and British Columbia Gazette excerpts regarding Workmen's Compensation, 1902 and 1904. The books contain primarily civil matters.
