Biographical history
The County Court of Nanaimo “holden at Cumberland” existed by 1898 and presumably earlier. [See: BC Gazette 1898, p. 2385]. In 1952 the County Court registry at Cumberland was closed by OIC #0889-1952, approved and ordered April 18, 1952, effective April 1, 1952. By the same order, the Supreme Court registry at Cumberland was also closed. Also by the same order, registries of the County Court and Supreme Court were established at Courtenay. The British Columbia government established a Supreme Court registry at Cumberland (in the Nanaimo Judicial District), approved and ordered by Order-in-Council #0683-1934, dated June 6, 1934.
The registry was closed by OIC #0889-1952, approved and ordered April 18, 1952, effective April 1, 1952. By the same order, the County Court registry at Cumberland was also closed. Also by the same order, a registry of the Supreme Court was established at Courtenay (in the Nanaimo Judicial District), and a registry of the County Court (County of Nanaimo) was established at Courtenay.
