Biographical history

Richard Allen Lloyd (Dick) Harvey (1930-2007), born in Winnipeg, moved to Vancouver with his family at age five. He first worked as a butcher at Woodward's in Vancouver. His interest in the outdoors led to a career with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. He was the first manager of the Big Qualicum River Salmonid Enhancement Project, and he later managed the start-up of the Eagle River Hatchery near Malakwa. Harvey's life-long interest in nature and the environment led him to a second career as a wildlife cinematographer, producing educational documentaries about fisheries and conservation in BC, and shooting stock footage for various producers and broadcasters. His company was named Qualicum Film Productions, Inc. He died at his home in Comox on May 25, 2007.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds mainly consists of printing elements, prints, and video copies of four 16 mm documentary films made by Dick Harvey: "Indian Food Fishing on the Fraser River" (1982); "Roderick Haig-Brown Conservation Area" (1982), and two versions [long and short] of "Living River: An Ecological Study of a Pacific Slope River" (1973). There is also a print of a fifth title, "Big Qualicum River Development Project", produced by Harvey for Environment Canada in 1974; it was retained as a further example of his work.
