Ernest Baynes Cale was born in Stratford, Ontario, in October 1871. As a furniture salesman he travelled to western Canada and eventually decided to move to British Columbia. In 1908 he purchased a city block on 3rd Avenue in East Burnaby, and lived here with his family from Jun 1, 1908 to March 12, 1914. He also established a poultry ranch called “Baynescroft” at 1st Street and 3rd Avenue, where he raised exhibition poultry and bred Airedale terriers. Cale assisted in the formation of the B.C. Poultry Association in 1910 and was its first president. He purchased a share in, and eventually became owner, manager and editor of the magazine Successful Poultryman, “the official organ of the British Columbia Poultry Association”. He also served as treasurer of the B.C. Terminal City Kennel Club and on the Board of the Vancouver Exhibition. The depression of 1913 affected Cale's poultry business and advertising in the magazine. He moved his family to a 4 ½ acre property on The Kingsway in Central Park (Burnaby), where he continued his poultry business and ran the magazine from an office in his home. A printer's strike, together with the effects of the war, eventually forced him to give up the magazine. In about 1918 Cale joined the firm of McClelland and McCarter Ltd. (Mc & Mc), suppliers of animal feed, and he remained with them until his death. He held the patent on a recipe for chicken mash, and was responsible for purchasing the ingredients and overseeing preparation of the mash for the company. During the 1930's Cale owned land on Coughlin Road in Langley where he raised poultry using hired help, but he eventually sold his stock and rented out the ranch. Ernest Baynes Cale died in Vancouver on 6th April 1947.
