The item consists of an audio interview with Esther Gardom recorded in Victoria B.C. in 1983.
Tape summaries:
T4088:0018: track 1: Esther Gardom was born Esther Naden in Greenwood in 1900. Her father was an agent for the R.J. Bealey Investment Co. and also an MLA in B.C. between 1905-1909. Her family moved to Prince Rupert around 1908 and lived there for ten years. She describes the home in which she grew up in Prince Rupert as well as the one she lived in when the family moved to Victoria in 1918.
Track 2: Esther Gardom discusses her school days in both Prince Rupert and Victoria. Explains the difference between urban high school curriculum and rural curriculum. She talks about the group of girls who knit for the soldiers (WWI) after school. Taught her mother how to knit. Took senior matriculation in Victoria and then enrolled in nursing at UBC. Worked as a public health nurse in Saanich and Duncan, and traveling to all the smaller communities in the area.
T4088:0019: Track 1: Esther Gardom married and set up her own home in Victoria in 1934. She was forced to give up her job. She describes her home. She had 3 children in 3 1/2 years. She explains how her household tasks were different from her mothers.
