Biographical history

In 1905 the British Columbia government established a Supreme Court registry at Fernie, effective 1905 April 1. It was approved and ordered by Order-in-Council 0123-1905, dated 1905 March 7. (Source: Orders-in-Council; British Columbia Gazette 1905, p. 429).

The order also appointed the current Registrar of the County Court to be District Registrar of the Supreme Court.

From June to August 2002, Fernie operated as a temporary circuit court of Cranbrook. It closed again but reopened as a permanent circuit court of Cranbrook on 27 February 2003 with sitting days starting 1 June 2003. The Cranbrook registry is the successor to the Fernie registry.

Biographical history

[Archivist’s Note: The date of the establishment of the County Court registry at Fernie has not yet been confirmed by BC Archives staff (as of March 2016). However, it is known that it was established at least as early as March 1905. See: Order-in-Council 0123-1905, dated 1905 March 7 and British Columbia Gazette 1905, p. 429. By OIC # 0123-1905, the current Registrar of the County Court was appointed as District Registrar of the newly-created Supreme Court registry.

All County Courts were merged into the Supreme Court on July 1, 1990.
