Scope and content

The photos document Moore’s experiences during his service as an administrator in the British colonial forces in China between 1860 and 1885. To speculate, a business card titled “Catalogue of Pictures by C.F. Moore, Member of the London Amateur Photographic Association,” lists 40 images available for sale. The card is dated, Ningpo, China, 1873. The 41 descriptions approximate the content of many of the 99 glass plate negatives listed below (see “Series Two, MS-3172, box 1, file 4.”) For further possible descriptions of the photos, Moore wrote a narrative of his experiences in China. This was a part of the text for his presentations on China he made in British Columbia. The text includes descriptions of 56 photographs he displayed during his presentations (see “Notes for Lecture on China in the Time of General Gordon.” Series Two, MS-3172, Box 1, file 5).
