Scope and content

Series consists of 99 b&w, collodion glass plate negatives, 1 album containing 155 b&w prints, and 3 b&w loose prints. Moore took the images during his time serving as an administrative official in the British colonial administration in China between the years 1860 and 1885. Moore had a random documentary approach to the photography; he took photographs of city views, people, palace and building ruins, tombs, pagodas, temples, and cemeteries. He offered the images for sale, and later used his personal collection to conduct magic lantern presentations to illustrate lectures of his experiences in China which included the Taiping Rebellion and the 1864 capture of Nanking.
