Biographical history

The Dept. of Recreation and Conservation was established in 1957 with the enactment of the Department of Recreation and Conservation Act (SBC 1957, c. 53). The mandate of the Dept. of Recreation and Conservation, from 1957 to 1967, included the management and administration of parks, fisheries, community programs and recreational facilities. Prior to that, the Game Act, for which it was now responsible, had been administered by the Attorney-General. Parks had been administered by the Dept. of Lands and Forests, and fisheries by the Provincial Dept. of Fisheries. The British Columbia Government Travel Bureau, which had been created in 1938 in the Department of Attorney-General, was also transferred to the Dept. of Recreation and Conservation in 1957.

The department was divided into four branches: Fish and Game Branch, Provincial Parks Branch, Photographic Branch, and Commercial Fisheries Branch. The Tourist Council was also established at this time, which along with the British Columbia Government Travel Bureau, reported to the Minister of Recreation and Conservation.

In 1967, responsibility for the British Columbia Government Travel Bureau was moved to the new Dept. of Travel Industry but it returned to the Dept. of Recreation and Conservation in 1975. At that time, the department’s name was changed to Dept. of Recreation and Tourism (OIC 3841/1975).
