History
Noel Hall was born in 1930 and completed high school in 1948 at Weyburn Collegiate Institute in Saskatchewan. He received a Bachelor of Commerce and Business Administration degree from the University of British Columbia in 1953, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles in 1955 and a Doctor of Business Administration from the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard in 1960. His major area of study was industrial relations and organizational behaviour.
From 1953 until 1981 Dr. Hall held various positions at the University of British Columbia. He was promoted to the rank of full professor in 1964 and held lecturer positions and visiting professorships at other institutions around the world. Dr. Hall was also very active in university administration and from 1974 to 1976 he was the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration.
From 1954 to 1981 Dr. Hall served as an Arbitrator, Mediator, or Industrial Inquiry Commissioner in a wide variety of industrial disputes, handling over 100 disputes during his career. As one of three special advisors to the Provincial Government in 1973, Dr. Hall assisted in examining all phases of labour legislation in BC. The result of that work was the Labour Code of British Columbia, one of the most innovative and most effective means of dealing with industrial relations.
