This series contains departmental general correspondence files, 1917-1922, pertaining to Songhees land in Victoria. Files, which had been alienated from the Railway Dept. filing system (also see GR-0817) and transferred to the Dept. of Lands, include Railway file 53.3 "Songhees industrial leases", 53.4 "Foundation Company--Imperial Munitions Board" and parts of 53.5 "Johnson Street Bridge". The series also contains two agreements (1917, 1919) involving the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway.

Francis E. Fredette interview

CALL NUMBER: T1651:0001 RECORDED: [location unknown], [196-] SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Francis Edmund Fredette of Victoria describes how he always wanted to go to sea, and so ran away from home on a sealing ship when he was fourteen; he describes the vessel he was on, including life aboard it; sealing with shotguns; what Victoria Harbour was like at that time; wages; his time (1909) as an apprentice at a shipyard where sternwheelers were built for use on the Skeena River; more on sealing including details on the seal themselves; how the Canadians, Japanese and Americans were the only ones sealing at that time; more on the sternwheelers he helped to build by hand; a six-month trip to the Bering Sea for salt cod in 1912, including details about the trip, the schooner they were on, and the fishing. TRACK 2: Mr. Fredette continues by discussing his experience in 1919 when he got a job aboard a ship as a carpenter; anecdotes about experiences on the ship; shipping laws at that time and implications; and a story about a criminal incident during prohibition.

The item is a black and white photograph probably taken by Charles Macmunn in 1897 or 1898. It is taken from Christchurch Cathedral in Victoria looking towards James Bay and shows the new Parliament buildings and the birdcage buildings.

Jim Ryan fonds

The fonds consists of photographs and other records from 1908 to ca. 1995, created or collected by Jim Ryan in the course of his career as a photographer. There are approximately 105,738 photographs, mostly black and white and colour negatives, but also including prints, slides and glass slides. The fonds also includes textual records consisting of news stories, copies of Ryan's publications, a few letters and other such material. The majority of the photographs were taken in the Victoria area and include images of the harbour, the city, buildings, events and parks. There are many photographs of British Columbia politicians, notably W.A.C. Bennett, as well as distinguished visitors, federal and local politicians. There are also photographs of local characters, children and ordinary people. Although most of the photographs were taken in the Victoria area, there are occasional images taken in other areas of Vancouver Island as well as some of Ryan's travel photographs. Some of the earliest material relates to World War I and may be Ryan family photographs or items that Ryan collected out of interest.

The fonds also includes motion picture film material, including completed films, production elements, news stories shot for television, and selected reels of footage.

Ken Alexander interview

Alexander, "Hally Alexander"; childhood reminiscences; coastal boats and tugs; Deadman's Island; Victoria Harbour; the Gorge; Archie McLean; "Sea Wolf"; and the gold rushes. TRACK 2: Mr. Alexander talks about the tugs stationed in Victoria Harbour; the "Lorne"; his mother's family; and his maternal grandfather and the Riel rebellion.

Moving mountains

Industrial film. Highlights Island Tug & Barge Ltd.'s role in developing the ocean-going barge, including the conversion of four tankers into self-dumping log barges (which can also be used to transport other materials). Shows the 1962 launching of the "Island Exporter", which (like her sister barge "Island Importer") was built to carry crushed limestone and similar cargoes on the open Pacific. Loading/unloading systems. Notable voyages. Tugs pulling Davis rafts and berthing a replica of the "Bounty".

The series consists of records created by the Federal Department of Marine and Fisheries (Vancouver Office) between 1888 and 1952. It includes agreements and accounts of crew, 1890-1952; and log books and other miscellaneous records, 1888-1938.

The following government ministries were responsible for the Mercantile Marine Shipping Office during the period that the records were created: Dept. of Marine and Fisheries (1888-1930), Dept. of Marine (1930-1936) and Dept. of Transport (1936-1952).
