The item consists of an audio interview with Helen Cochran recorded in Victoria, B.C. on August 15, 1984.

Tape summary:
Track 1: Helen Cochran begins by describing the house she was raised in. She talks of the kitchen. How it was remodelled in 1938. Changes in stoves over the years. Early on they had a Chinese laundryman. In the early-mid 1920s, they purchased an iron and a toaster. Helen talks of other hired help. How her mother shopped. Her mother's sewing. How her mother spent her days -- her cooking, clubs, Red Cross work. Their diet -- breakfast, the main meal, and canning.

Track 2: How her mother learned to cook. Her mother teaching the girls. Her mother's style of cooking. Mother's knowledge of nutrition. Home cures and medicine. Magazines. Garbage disposal. Home deliveries. Making cottage cheese and soap. Laundry service and washing. How girls perceived their roles in the future.
