Cominco power plants

The item is a short sequence that appears to be part of an industrial film about Cominco dams and power plants on the Kootenay River. Shows power plants at Lower Bonnington Falls, Upper Bonnington Falls, and South Slocan. This section of film was removed from a reel containing loose sections of film with sequences on different Cominco subjects.

John Jerome interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-09-08 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. John H. Jerome remembers the West Kootenay Power and Light Company, and the South Slocan region. He came to work for the company in 1916 at the age of eighteen. He describes the West Kootenay Power and Light Company from 1898; modern hydro and dam development; Mr. Jerome as an operator for forty-seven years; the past versus the present; the people of the South Slocan region; early roads and transportation; settlement around 1912; the eccentric British immigrants; the South Slocan Chalet; the Doukhobors; mines and the Nelson City Power Plant. Kootenay canal

The item is a composite print of a documentary made between 1972 and 1975. It is a look at the construction of a unique power project -- a canal to harness the flood waters of the Kootenay River. The film highlights the environmental aspects of this engineering achievement, which harnesses needed energy from the river while protecting the environment of beaver, fish and deer. Nakusp lakefront, with the retired sternwheeler "Bonnington" at dock; local residents, streets and buildings (Arrow Lake Hotel, Arrow Lakes Hospital); a sawmill. Brief shot of sternwheeler "Minto" approaching dock. Edgewood General Store. Lake fishing; resort. Parade and sports day in Salmo (joint Dominion Day and Independence Day celebration?), with long sequence showing a performance by a uniformed girls' drill team. Main street of Greenwood, where a baseball team warms up and poses with locals. A nearby mining community (probably Phoenix), with mining operation and many dilapidated buildings; residents and a bearded old timer pose for the camera. Cominco's operations in Trail and Kimberley are discussed from the viewpoint of various Cominco employees. Includes footage of: Sullivan Mine; refining and smelting processes for lead, zinc, silver; power plant on Kootenay River; research and development; use of metals refined; manufacture of fertilizer from smelter emissions; mine exploration and prospecting across Canada; facilities, accommodations and recreational activities [e.g. hockey, Kimberley Dynamiters, etc.] in communities around the plants. The compilation shows the company's mining, smelting and related operations in southeastern British Columbia including: the Sullivan Mine and concentrator at Kimberley; a power plant on the Kootenay River; the Trail smelter; and the fertilizer plant at Warfield.
