Biographical history
James Hatter was born in Victoria, B.C. in 1921. He grew up in Lake Cowichan where he graduated from high school in 1939. He attended Victoria College and went on to the University of British Columbia where he graduated in 1945.
He joined the British Columbia Game Dept. in 1947 as Game Biologist. He went to Washington State University to gain a Ph.D. in 1952 after studying the ecology of moose in central British Columbia. In that same year he became the province's Chief Game Biologist and then Branch Director of the Fish and Game Branch in 1963. He also served as part-time Assistant Professor of Zoology at UBC from 1952 to 1955.
Dr. Hatter retired in 1979 as Director, Fish and Wildlife Branch. He is the author of many articles and papers on game administration and management. His interests have focused on educating the public about the factors that control the presence and abundance of game animals and wildlife. In addition, Hatter has been a hunter and angler for most of his life.
James Hatter died in Victoria on May 19, 2012.

The fonds consists of records created by James Hatter between 1947 and 1994. They include correspondence with wildlife specialists regarding moose, 1947 to 1956; reports on game management, 1951 and 1975; and articles, presentations and speeches written by Hatter between 1949 and 1994 regarding wildlife and game management in British Columbia.
