Biographical history
Byron Ingemar Johnson was born in Victoria, B.C. He served with the British Army in World War I. After the war, he and his brother established Johnson Brothers, a Victoria trucking and supply business. In 1930, the firm amalgamated with Evans, Coleman and Gilley Brothers, later becoming Evans, Coleman and Johnson. In 1933, Johnson was elected Liberal MLA for Victoria but was defeated in 1937. During World War II, Johnson worked as a technical adviser for the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was elected again to the B.C. Legislature in 1945. In 1947, Johnson became B.C. Liberal leader and Premier of British Columbia, a post he held until 1952.
