Diaries

Diaries, 1903 and 1905; log of his yacht "Toketie," 1926, 1927, 1929, 1931-1940; diaries of summer cruises, 1933, 1934-1936, 1938-1940, 1941; archaeological catalogue. Mr. Barrow emigrated to Canada at the turn of the century, and looked for land in the Kootenays and lived on the Gulf Islands (initially on Brethour Island) before settling near Sidney. He and his wife spent many summers cruising the coast and his diaries contain notes on people they met, Indian villages, pictographs, petroglyphs, and many photographs. A selection of the photographs has been copied by Historic Photographs.

Diaries, letters and notes

Diaries (1854-1883), covering travels from Lachine to Red River (1854-1855), Lachine to Honolulu (1859), the voyage to Victoria (1860), travel in British Columbia (1864, 1867, 1868, 1870), journeys to Europe (1865 and 1880), travel from Montreal, where he was Chief Factor (1872, 1875, 1877, 1879), and a journey to Japan and China (1882-1883). The British Columbia diaries cover travel on the North West Coast (1870) to the Kootenays via the Dewdney Trail (1868) and to French Creek, McCullough Creek, Kamloops, Clearwater River, etc. (1867), and life in Victoria (1864). Letters and notes, including one letter written by his son Edwin to his mother, 7 June 1914, Winnipeg, describing his visit to Victoria and Vancouver.

Fort Steele mining recorder records

The series consists of records created by the Fort Steele Mining Recorder between 1895 and 1918. The records cover the area surrounding Fort Steele and along the St. Mary's River in the Fort Steele Mining Division of the East Kootenay District. The records include applications under the Mineral Act for mining claims and certificates of work; notices from miners filed with mining recorder; and transcribed copies of mineral claim transfers and conveyances, primarily in the form of bills of sale.

Frederick Norbury papers

Series consists of photocopies of letters, 1887-1889, and diary, 1895, of Frederick Norbury describing his emigration from England and life as a rancher and occasional holder of government posts near Fort Steele, 1887-1899; 2 letters from his brother William, Kootenay district, 1888 and 1889; 2 letters from David Griffith to R.L.T. Galbraith, 1886, describing conditions at Wild Horse Creek; 2 letters from William Thomson to M.W. Schilling, 1912, re mining in Kootenay district.

Grand Forks Provincial Court offence and complaint books

The series consists of four volumes of offence and complaint books dating from 1924 to 1949. Two books appear to have been kept concurrently for the period 1943 to 1947. Offences do not appear to be duplicated between them. The volumes provide a brief description of the offence, the action taken by authorities, and the result. The volumes cover a variety of offences, from unattended livestock to allegations of domestic abuse. Typical entries list the name of the complainant(s) as well as names of those interviewed or searched. A nominal index is included in the front of the 1943-1947 and 1943-1949 volumes.

Grand Forks Supreme Court cause books

The series consists of four volumes of indexed cause books, created in the Grand Forks registry between 1900 and 1969. A typical cause book entry lists the style of cause, solicitors' names, nature of claim, and the dates of various proceedings in each case. The entry also provides the case file number. For Supreme Court cases, cause books are often used as a starting point for research. The cause books include information on adoption, divorce, chattel mortgages, and other civil proceedings.

The records are arranged by case number and are also chronological.

The series consists of orders created by the Grand Forks Supreme Court registry between 1900-1949. Between 1900 and 1922, the orders relate to a variety of civil matters such as loans and mortgages, debts, guardianship of minors, and estate matters, including probates. Beginning June 1922, records are probate orders only.

Records are arranged chronologically and were assigned file, volume, and folio numbers by the court registry. An alphabetical index by last name is included within both bound volumes of records.
