Allan H. DeWolf films

The series consists of film footage shot by Allan Hatch DeWolf, mainly in the East Kootenay Region of British Columbia. Subjects include: construction and operation of B.C. Spruce Mills' 14-mile-long Moyie River flume near Lumberton, ca.1925; construction of the Mammoth Mine concentrator at Silverton; a portable McKowan Mill cutting Ponderosa pine in the Kamloops or Nelson Forest District, ca.1934; logging sled (colour); tie-cutting operation with portable mill; trucking, unloading and scaling of logs; Cranbrook Dominion Day parade, 1927; family and friends at play, etc. Also includes the four-reel title A BIG GAME HUNT IN BRITISH COLUMBIA (1926).

Boyd Affleck interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-09-08 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Boyd Campbell Affleck came to the Kootenay/Arrow Lakes region in 1907 from Ontario. He took up a surveying job near Nakusp. He discusses settlers and speculators. He describes Fruitva;le in 1907; the development; the early settlers. Then he discusses irrigation and then more on Fruitvale; the impact of WWI on the region; fruit grown; a picnic in the 1930s; settlers; clearing land; and the Fruitvale town site. Mr. Affleck settled near Fruitvale in 1918; lost his hand and was forced back into survey work. He surveyed the town of Salmo. He offers an anecdote about the red light ladies of Erie and then offers more about Fruitvale; the impact of the Trail smelter; and recalls the forest fire of 1939. TRACK 2: Mr. Affleck continues with more on the forest fire. Then he dis;cusses the Trail smelter; effects on fruit farms; Columbia Gardens and survey work at Nelson. He offers more on Fruitvale and Nelson in 1907; transportation; the rivalry between the CPR and GN boats.; He tells a story of how Kaslo tried to steal the Nelson Board of Trade in the 1890s. He discusses the Fruitvale power system in the 1920s; Nelson City Light. He describes the rivalry between West Kootenay Power and Light, and Nelson City Light.

Capt. Walter Spiller : [reminiscences]

SUPPLIED TITLE OF TAPE(S): Steamboating on BC interior lakes PERIOD COVERED: 1917-1963 RECORDED: Victoria (B.C.), 1979 SUMMARY: Captain Walter H. Spiller recalls his service with the CPR's BC Lake and River Service on the interior lakes from 1917 to 1963. Beginning as a youthful general duty hand he rose to command paddlewheelers and tugs. These tapes provide "a comprehensive and chronological coverage of the development and decline of steamboating on the interior lakes, with details of vessels and the names of personnel involved. [NOTE: Captain Spiller's reminiscences were first prepared for a talk given to members of the Thermopylae Club of Victoria in 1979. The original talk was retaped, with further details added, later in 1979. The revised tapes and the original taped talk were loaned to the Maritime Museum of B.C. for copying.]

Centennial travellers

The item consists of a documentary film in two parts. To mark Canada's hundredth anniversary, Canadian young people exchanged visits. This film follows a group of Québec boys and girls, aged thirteen to sixteen, who travelled 4800 kilometres west to Cranbrook, British Columbia. The easy friendliness between the young people of two cultures inspires optimism. (NLC description).

Cominco power plants

The item is a short sequence that appears to be part of an industrial film about Cominco dams and power plants on the Kootenay River. Shows power plants at Lower Bonnington Falls, Upper Bonnington Falls, and South Slocan. This section of film was removed from a reel containing loose sections of film with sequences on different Cominco subjects.

David Sutcliffe interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-09-10 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. David Sutcliffe discusses the Kootenay Lake steamers including the "Nasookin" and the "Kootenay". He describes the competition between the two companies; shipping horses on the "Nasookin"; Kootenay Landing; the tug boats; passenger service; mail delivery; freight; the "Kokanee" running aground near Riondel; social life and customs: the chivaree; the maiden voyage of the "Nasookin"; ;a boat called the "International"; the Bluebell Mine in 1910; problems with a new pump system; the shafts; use of candles and lime dust. TRACK 2: Mr. Sutcliffe continues by describing the Pilot Bay, Smelter and Galena Bay. Then he returns to discussing steamers such as the "International" and the "Alberta". He came to Riondel to work on a fruit farm in 1910. He describes the mine mill; Pilot Bay; independent miners; the beginnings of Riondel; the name 'Bluebell' was given by David Douglas in 1834; early history of the Bluebell Mine to 1905; Riondel in 1910; an anecdote about Ainsworth BC; working conditions; the Kirby Mine; more anecdotes; more about Riondel; nationalities of the miners; and more about the Kirby Mine.

Edith Helen Edgar interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-09-09 SUMMARY: Mrs. Edgar recalls early Nakusp, Slocan and Nelson. Her father, Denis St. Denis, who died in 1962, came from Ontario to Nakusp and worked as a bookkeeper for the mills. The family later moved to Slocan, where her father was city clerk, and agent for a lumber company. In 1910 they moved to Nelson, and lived in Fairview (Bogustown). Her father was the Trustee of Bankruptcy, a member of the BC Rifle Association, had a "wonderful memory", and wrote local history articles.

End of an era : the S.S. Moyie

The item is a documentary film about the last voyage of the sternwheeler S.S. "Moyie" on Kootenay Lake, 27 April 1957. Includes footage of the wheelhouse, engine room, and galley; arrival and docking operations; the "Moyie" moving a barge with railroad cars; passengers boarding for the final voyage; and Kootenay Lake scenery. The car ferry M.V. "Balfour" is also shown.
