British Columbia Hydro : miscellaneous footage, reel 2

The item consists of a reel of reversal film footage from 1973. It shows conditions on Arrow Lake reservoir (at low water) at Shelter Bay and Galena Bay, caterpillar tractors clearing and piling forest debris on beaches, the Dept. of Highways ferry, tug and boom collecting water-borne debris, Corra Lynn Dam and the beginning of excavation of a canal.

Columbia & Kootenay River flood, 1961

The item is a reel of spliced film footage from 1961. It shows flooding of the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers in early June, 1961. Includes footage of: rivers in flood, dikes and inundated streets in Trail, flooded land and roads in the vicinity, Bonnington and Corra Linn dams on the Kootenay River and Robson (?) ferry at dock..

Cominco power plants

The item is a short sequence that appears to be part of an industrial film about Cominco dams and power plants on the Kootenay River. Shows power plants at Lower Bonnington Falls, Upper Bonnington Falls, and South Slocan. This section of film was removed from a reel containing loose sections of film with sequences on different Cominco subjects.

John Jerome interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-09-08 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. John H. Jerome remembers the West Kootenay Power and Light Company, and the South Slocan region. He came to work for the company in 1916 at the age of eighteen. He describes the West Kootenay Power and Light Company from 1898; modern hydro and dam development; Mr. Jerome as an operator for forty-seven years; the past versus the present; the people of the South Slocan region; early roads and transportation; settlement around 1912; the eccentric British immigrants; the South Slocan Chalet; the Doukhobors; mines and the Nelson City Power Plant. Kootenay canal

The item is a composite print of a documentary made between 1972 and 1975. It is a look at the construction of a unique power project -- a canal to harness the flood waters of the Kootenay River. The film highlights the environmental aspects of this engineering achievement, which harnesses needed energy from the river while protecting the environment of beaver, fish and deer. Kootenay Lake and River

Item consists of one bound atlas measuring 52 x 34 cm, created by the Canadian Hydrograph Service. It contains one index map and 14 detailed charts of the Kootenay River, from mile 0 to mile 29, and areas of Kootenay Lake. Also included are sailing directions and a waterway mileage table.

Kootenay west

Travelogue. From Osoyoos to Trail and Nelson by the Southern Trans-Provincial Highway. Footage includes: Cominco smelter; the sternwheeler "Minto" on the Arrow Lakes and at Castlegar; Kootenay River power station; lumbering scenes; car ferry on Kootenay Lake; and Nelson scenes (including the Curling Bonspiel parade).

Nakusp lakefront, with the retired sternwheeler "Bonnington" at dock; local residents, streets and buildings (Arrow Lake Hotel, Arrow Lakes Hospital); a sawmill. Brief shot of sternwheeler "Minto" approaching dock. Edgewood General Store. Lake fishing; resort. Parade and sports day in Salmo (joint Dominion Day and Independence Day celebration?), with long sequence showing a performance by a uniformed girls' drill team. Main street of Greenwood, where a baseball team warms up and poses with locals. A nearby mining community (probably Phoenix), with mining operation and many dilapidated buildings; residents and a bearded old timer pose for the camera. Scenery with river and waterfall (possibly Cascade Falls on the Kettle River?). New Denver Fire Hall.

Stock shots. Shows the areas that would be flooded by construction of the Libby Dam on the Kootenay River and the Mica Dam on the Columbia River. Wildlife, farmland, sawmills, land clearing, and settlements along the Kootenay River, at the border and to the north. Up the Columbia River from Kinbasket Lake; Surpise Rapids; logging with a sky-line along the Columbia; river boat; Canoe River.
