History
Alfred John (A.J.) Langley was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England ca. 1821. With his brother, Alfred James Langley (ca. 1825-1895), he moved to Nova Scotia, New York, and then California, where they opened a drug store in 1849. In 1858, the pair moved to Victoria and re-established their pharmaceutical business on Yates Street as Langley & Co. In 1861, Langley was appointed to the Legislative Council of Vancouver Island by Sir James Douglas. He returned to England to marry Mary Edwin (ca. 1836-1876) in 1862. While in London, he represented Vancouver Island at the 1862 International Exhibition and published A Glance at British Columbia and Vancouver’s Island in 1861. Langley and his wife returned to Victoria in the 1860s and raised five children. In addition to being a druggist, Langley served on the Board of Education and was Justice of the Peace for Vancouver Island. He died in Victoria in 1896.
