Scope and content
The item consists of an audio interview with Lillian Marshall recorded in Victoria, B.C. on June 14, 1983.
Tape summary:
Track 1: Lillian Marshall describes the home she lived in as a child. The kitchen she felt was not really convenient. Her mother's life was centred around kitchen activities. The duties around the home are described -- her chores, her brother's chores, and the weekly routine of her mother. Describes the bi-yearly house cleaning. The daily diet is discussed, plus special days like Christmas and Sunday dinner. Household appliances are described.
Track 2: Describes home deliveries. Her mother used recipes from her "own head". Dangerous kitchen work was boiling water and the stove. Felt that "mothers had to be nurses too". Describes domestic science class [see notes taken from her 1922 domestic science notebook]. Talks of reasons for domestic science. Her teacher, Miss Scott. Course content and appliances are described. Found domestic science beneficial because it taught her accuracy in measurements. Describes mother's attitude to domestic science. Worked as a seamstress after school. When set up own home, felt mother influenced her cooking more than domestic science class. Believes that domestic science was useful.
