Biographical history
Lou J. Englehart (1915-1989) was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick. He started his art education in 1935 in Ohio with commercial art and cartooning, working in this field and as a teacher in the United States and Canada until he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940. After 1945 he studied at the Vancouver School of Art under Charles H. Scott and others, and graduated in 1949. He was employed for 25 years as an art educator with Cowichan High School and the Burnaby School Board, retiring from the latter in 1974.
Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds consists of watercolour sketches and one drawing of beehive burners created in the field by Lou J. Englehart as the basis for a series of oil paintings. As the original source of the oil paintings, the watercolours document the state of beehive burners within a four-year period after they were outlawed in 1970. The fonds also includes 1 oil painting of the Mazur Lumber Co., Elko, sawmill and burner, 1974. It is based on the watercolour sketch PDP10033 from May 1974
