History

The H.R. MacMillan Export Company was formed by ex-Chief Forester Harvey Reginald MacMillan on July 28 1919. Originally formed as a trading company, the successor companies which bore MacMillan name quickly became known as the largest softwood producing companies in the history of the Province during the years of its operation. MacMillan quickly started acquiring operations within province, such as what would be known as the Canadian White Pine Division mill in 1929, as well as the historic Humbird family owned Victoria Lumber and Manufacturing Company Limited in 1946. A number of large mergers in the post-War era with Bloedel, Stewart and Welch and the Powell River Company - 1951 and 1959 respectively - led to the dominance of the firm in the province's softwood sector. While surviving economic downturns in the 1970s and 1980s with a programme of corporate restructuring, the company was left weakened. In 1999, the company was acquired by Weyerhaeuser after many years of closures and asset sales.
