Scope and content
This series consists of correspondence from friends and family members, including letters written by Martha and James William Douglas as children and a letter written to Lady Douglas by Sister Marguerite Connolly (Lady Douglas' sister), 1884. Other records include: a memoir of Martha's early life in Victoria, with details about notable Victoria families; D.R. Harris' journal describing a survey in the Michipicoten River area in anticipation of the Canadian Pacific Railway, 15 June – 15 October [1871?]; Dennis Harris’ Original Field Book for the Canadian Pacific Railway Exploratory Surveys, 1871; records concerning D.R. Harris' interests in the West Wellington Coal Company, 1894-1899; records of Sir James Douglas concerning the British Columbia/United States water boundary (including his observations on the Oregon Treaty), 1871; transcripts about settlement and mineral rights in the British Columbia Railway Belt, 1885; a scrapbook of newspaper clippings; Martha Douglas’ childhood journal (1866-1869); and various publications which belonged to members of the Douglas family, including Martha Harris' History and Folklore of the Cowichan Indians (1901). The series also includes 58 photographs and 1 artwork.
