History

John Foster McCreight was born in Ireland in 1827. Called to the Irish Bar in 1852, he emigrated first to Australia and then to Vancouver Island in 1860. He served as B.C.'s first premier from 1871-1872. He was treasurer of the Law Society of British Columbia from 1874 to 1880, at which time he received a judicial appointment, serving as a judge in Barkerville, Victoria and New Westminster. He retired in 1897 and left B.C. to settle in England, where he died.
