RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-06-17 SUMMARY: Norman Newton presents a program on musical styles and instruments common to the Indigenous cultures in British Columbia. He provides examples of various instruments including: flutes, drums, rattles and whistles. Musical examples from five areas of the province are heard and discussed including: the Southern Coast, the Central Coast, the Northern Coast, the Southern Interior, and the Northern Interior. Musical selections include: a "Medicine Song" of the Kwakiutl, "Headdress Song" sung by Mungo Martin, a "Gambling Song", a song from the Flathead Salish people, a love song from the Interior Salish people sung by Marius Barbeau, drinking songs from Fort St. James sung by John Prince, a Gitksan love song sung by Jeffrey Johnson, a choral selection of Handel's Messiah from New Metlakatla, Alaska, and Tsimshian songs about "Damlahamlet" (sp?) sung by Irene Harris. Note: This program is followed by interviews with an unidentified speaker and with Roy Azak.
