John Work fonds

The fonds consists of 15 journals, one notebook, and correspondence written by John Work. The notebook was written in 1834, and the journals extend from 1823-1835 when Work was traveling as a trader for the Hudson's Bay Company in the western US and western Canada area. These journals are arranged by date. There is an inventory of the journals and an original note by Work written in 1831.
The fonds also contains a 1945 transcription of Work's 13 May - 26 May, 1851 journal which was written while Work was looking for gold in the Queen Charlotte Islands.

Logbook of Bernard Magee

The series consists of a microfilm copy of a logbook kept by Bernard Magee titled "...the most necessary remarks and observations in a voyage made on board ship Jefferson, Josiah Roberts Commander from Boston, North America to the North West Coast of the Same and round the globe".

Manuscript

Untitled manuscript consisting of a preface, an introductory chapter on Compton's voyage from England to Victoria via the Straits of Magellan, and sections on the geographical features (29 p.), the aboriginal inhabitants (39 p. and 78 p.), and the natural history (85 p.) of the British Columbia Coast. Compton traveled to Victoria on board the H.B.C. steamer Labouchere, arriving at Esquimalt on January 30, 1859. He served on the Labouchere as purser and at Fort Rupert as a H.B.C. clerk. The typed transcript is entitled as "Account of early trip to Fort Victoria and of life in the colony".

Records of the Russian American Company

The series consists of records of the Russian-American Company 1802-1867 including letters received by the Governors General, 1802-1866; letters sent by the Governors General, 1812-1867; logs of company ships, 1850-1867; and journals of exploring expeditions, 1842-1864.

The records were originally microfilmed as Reel A00818.
