SUPPLIED TITLE OF TAPE(S): Phyllis Bowman discusses the city of Prince Rupert, 1920-1968 PERIOD COVERED: 1904-1968 RECORDED: Prince Rupert (B.C.), 1968 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Phyllis Bowman recounts her father's coming to Prince Rupert (ca.1905), her mother's coming to Port Essington and her schooling at the Inverness Cannery. Phyllis Bowman speaks about her uncle;s -- Paul and Walter Wicks, the "Prince Rupert Society" and her family's move to Prince Rupert. She discusses the town plans for Prince Rupert, the Borden, Booth and King Edward schools, rumors of the; Prince Rupert port development, "City of Certainties", early economy, effects of the U.S. armed forces in WWII, Prince Rupert as the terminus of the Alaska Ferry Highway System, launching of the "Que;en of Prince Rupert", tourism facilities and an anecdote about a "Communist plot". TRACK 2: Phyllis Bowman continues with her thoughts about tourism in Prince Rupert in 1910 and the 1960's, life in the community, the Indian population, ethnic groups, local architecture, fires and their impact, intergovernmental rivalry, and relations between troops and the townspeople during WWII.
