SUPPLIED TITLE OF TAPE(S): Bill White : women in the shipyards in World War II RECORDED: Vancouver (B.C.), 1978-08 SUMMARY: Bill White was president of the Boilermakers local in Prince Rupert during the war at the shipyards. Many women from the community entered the shipyards in 1941-42. Mr. White was active in defending women's rights to a job at the end of the war. In this interview, he describes conditions in Prince Rupert; the growth of the shipyards; battles between soldiers, workers and Native people; racism in Prince Rupert; response to the entry of women into the yards; attitudes towards the Japanese; anti-war sentiments; the no-strike pledge and the Labour Progressive Party. Mr. White was a member of the Trotskyist organisation at this time (1943). Women were brought into the Prince Rupert shipyards as helpers or improvers, after taking a several-months-long training course in welding. The helpers strung the burners' hoses, and the women were soon proficiently stringing their own hoses and cables. The shift would get off and drink at the Savoy Hotel; it became clear that women had been accepted into the yards when the crew accepted the women buying rounds of drinks. Women served as stewards in the union.

Certified copies of "certain Bills of Sale, Chattel Mortgages, Conditional Sales Notes and Assignment of Book Debts, which were registered in the County Court office here [Prince Rupert] prior to the time that the Smithers Registry was segregated from this Registry..." These copies were made and transferred to Smithers in 1925. An index to these files is found in GR-2583.

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1976-07-30 SUMMARY: TRACKS 1 & 2: Reggie Sparkes was born in Newfoundland in 1902. He came to Vancouver in 1922 and went to work for the CPR's BC Coast Service, then went to the Canadian National ship "Prince Henry". Canadian National failed to establish itself on the Triangle run. Sparkes served on a minesweeper during World War II. He was a member of the Canadian Merchant Service Guild. He later worked for the White Pass and Yukon Route, and was the first master of the "Clifford J. Rogers", the first container ship in the world.

RECORDED: Prince Rupert (B.C.), 1982-01 (ca.) SUMMARY: Clarence Isulander, founder of radio station CFPR and chief engineer when CFPR was owned by the CBC, recalls the station's early years. He was at CFPR from 1935 to 1969, although his recollections go ;back to the 1920s, when he was involved in early ham radio activity.;

John C. Goodfellow was a United Church minister and a historian. He wrote many articles on the history of the Similkameen area and on other topics.

This microfilm is a copy of the files Goodfellow kept which relate to the history of the United Church in the Prince Rupert Presbytery. The files contain correspondence, clippings and reports relating to the history of the communities and the churches in the communities. The files are in alphabetical order by place name.
