History
The New Westminster Provincial Asylum opened in 1878. That same year, the Asylum at Royal Hospital in Victoria closed and all patients were transferred to New Westminster. In 1897 the New Westminster Provincial Asylum was renamed the Public Hospital for the Insane (PHI), also referred to as the Provincial Hospital for the Insane.
In 1913, all male patients were transferred to the newly opened Essondale hospital in Coquitlam. Only female patients were treated at PHI until 1930 when the Female Chronic Unit opened at Essondale, later renamed East Lawn. After 1930, the focus of PHI moved to caring for the cognitively disabled.
In 1950 PHI was renamed Woodlands School and cared exclusively for children.
