British Columbia Cattle Company records

The British Columbia Cattle Company was incorporated by John Irving, Thomas Ellis and Richard Lowe Cawston on Nov. 5, 1890, to carry on farming, stock-raising and butchering and to acquire land for those purposes. The company managed the Triangle Ranch at Quilchena and the Canoe Creek Ranch. The firm was deleted from the companies register in 1944. Fonds consists of one series of correspondence inward dealing with miscellaneous matters relating to the management of the two ranches and the sale of beef cattle. Gerard Guichon interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-06-27 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Gerard E. Guichon describes his grandfather, Joseph Guichon, as a packer for Cataline in the 1870s; his grandparents ranch on the road to Douglas Lake; their property and store at Quilchena; his grandmother's family and Douglas Lake homesteaders; and a description of his grandfather and father. TRACK 2: He continues with a description of ranching at Douglas Lake in the past and present; the hotel and store at Quilchena in 1908 and 1910; running the bar; transportation in the area; the CPR; cattle markets; and a story about a murder in Barkerville.

The fonds consists of records created by the Guichon family between 1882 and 2013 and contain files relating to the family history including correspondence, diaries, subject files, genealogies, news clippings and scrapbooks; files relating to the family ranch including correspondence, reference material and publications; over 1300 photographs which document family and ranch life; and an audio recording interview with Lawrence Guichon.

Guichon family papers

The series consists of correspondence and other records created by the Guichon family between 1908 and 1934. It includes correspondence, including a typed translation of extracts from a letter to Laurent Guichon; two handwritten letters in French (one from 1913) to Joseph Guichon from relatives in France; and a portion of a 1919 letter to Joseph Guichon from Belgium from a soldier who had lived in the Nicola Valley.

The series also includes legal agreements, partnership agreements, 1922-1932, between the children of Joseph Guichon; memorandum of association, conveyance, etc. re the Guichon Ranch, 1933-1934 and a letter from a lawyer in 1931.

In addition there are records of the Quilchena Hotel including a register from 1908-1917; a journal dated 1914-1915; invoices from 1908; and a liquor licence from 1915.
